Karen Walwyn, Concert Pianist and Composer, and a Steinway Artist, successfully made her New York debut at Merkin Hall as a follow-up to her two-CD series for Albany Records entitled Dark Fires, offering premiere recordings of works by American composers of African descent.

Consequently, Walwyn, invited by the Center of Black Music Research in Chicago, performed and recorded the premiere recording of the Florence Price Concerto for Piano in One Movement with the New Black Music Repertory Ensemble produced by Deputy Director, Morris Phibbs. Noted music critic, Bob McQuiston, exclaimed: “Walwyn provides a magnificent account of the concerto displaying her considerable technical skills”.

Walwyn also is featured in the Emmy Nominated film, The Caged Bird: The life and music of Florence Price, which has been aired nationwide on PBS.

Inspired by her findings on the genius of Florence Price, it is the intent of Dr. Walwyn, a HBCU Mellon Faculty Fellow, (The John Hope Franklin Institute), to continue to record the music of and collect research on Florence Price.
